How to Easily Update Your Joomla Site

This week we'll walk you through how to easily upgrade your Joomla 1.5 site to the latest release of 1.5. Some caveats first:

  • Sorry ... there's no magic button to move from 1.0 to 1.5 or from 1.5. to 1.6.
  • If you've made any changes to the core Joomla files, you will need to upgrade manually.
  • Backup first! (use steps 1 to 5 here)
  • This solution is new and we now recommend it over the older solution we've previously given out in beginner classes.

Here's how you upgrade:

  1. Go to the http://extensons.joomla.org and download "Update Manager for Joomla"
  2. In the administration area of your local Joomla site, go to Extensions >> Install / Uninstall and upload the component file.
  3. Go to Components >> Update Manager
  4. Click "download the update file >>>"
  5. Click "Patch Package"
  6. Click "you can proceed with the install >>>"
  7. You should see the message "You have successfully upgraded your Joomla! install! Congratulations!"

As always, if you need any help with this feel free to post in our forum for support if you are a member.

So, can we upgrade to 1.6 from 1.5 now it is an official candidate or not? The post nor comments are clear on this. Anyone?

I got an error :
Unable to extract achieve.

Then i have to go to Parameter and Select "1.5 Pear Achieve Tar" instead of "1.6 Extractor" to successfully Update Joomla.

@2 Yes Joomla 1.6 Beta 15 is out but the update manager doesnt detect it, may be because it beta release of 1.6.

Thanks

Hi, thank you so much for this. You have a small typo on this page for the extensions.joomla.org link, which fails to open the right page.

Cheers, Simon
